If the human resources of the company in which you are applying a job has finally asked your references, then things are getting brighter. Most probably, it means you are close to being offered a job. In this regard, references are crucial and can greatly impact the final hiring decision.

Here are some tips in giving references:

1. Consider mentors, bosses, or co-workers who have had authority over you. They know you very well and can give a glowing report about you.
2. Include any authority figure such as professors, coaches and counselors. They know your strengths and weaknesses and can relay information about your proficiencies, skills and behaviors.
3. Do not include family and friends to your list of references. Most of the times, they are not privy to your working habits and career goals.
